Meet the Head Coach/es:
Helen Wright
- This is my second year as Lakewood’s Science Olympiad head coach, and I’m thrilled to take on the challenges of a new season—now with a fantastic co-head coach by my side! Originally from New Zealand, I love sharing my passion for nature and science with my two Lakewood students. I hope that being part of Science Olympiad will inspire them—and all our Lakewood lizards—to explore, learn, and fall in love with science!
Evelyn Eggenstein
- As a scientist and nature enthusiast, I was instantly drawn to the spirit of the Science Olympiad. But WESO is so much more — it’s about curiosity, teamwork, friendship, and the joy of discovery.
After seeing my son’s excitement and growth during last year’s WESO, I’m thrilled to help bring that same experience to more Lakewood families. I can’t wait to get started as co-head coach for WESO 2026, meet everyone and share in the fun and learning ahead!
Let’s inspire our kids to explore, experiment, and dream big — and have a lot of fun along the way. - You can reach out to us with any questions at: lakewoodptoweso@gmail.com

GOALS OF SCIENCE
OLYMPIAD
Increase interest in science and engineering
Foster growth of student’s knowledge in the sciences
Make science fun!
Having fun and learning should be the priority. No obligations.
To compete on event day or just participate to learn!
Team Work
Students participating in the Lakewood Science Olympiad team will:
- Practice team work, group planning, and cooperation
- Have fun learning science concepts through active hands-on group work
- Experience a unique team environment!

How Can you help?
Washtenaw Elementary Science Olympiad is 100% volunteer run. Lakewood’s participation is only possible with your help!
Please consider how you, friends, family or older students could help.
The Lakewood team will need:
- Event coaches
- Parent helpers for event coaches
- Day-of event volunteers
- FILLED for 2026: A key volunteer (or co-key volunteers)
- FILLED for 2026: Co-Head Coach
Role Descriptions:
Key Volunteer Position
Lakewood will be expected to provide one Key Volunteer to assist with tournament planning and execution. This person could function as a lead event supervisor, and event support supervisor or as a Key Volunteer on a tournament committee. These are critical roles and individuals may need to dedicate 20 or more hours to the role. This position must be filled by an adult. More information is available!
Event Volunteers
- If you are not our Key Volunteer or an event coach, we would very much appreciate your help as an event volunteer. Lakewood is required to provide at least 1 event volunteer for every 3 Olympians.
- Event volunteer opportunities will be available for sign up one month prior to the event. Positions include: night before set up, day of help (running events, helping direct Olympians), and post event clean up.
*Please note: volunteers may not work in an event where their own student is participating.
Co-Head Coach
- With very little experience, the role of Head Coach is a little daunting! I would love to have another willing helper to work with!
- No experience necessary, but a sense of humor is an advantage!
Event Coaches
All events that Lakewood students compete in require a coach or coaches. Anyone** can fill this position and no previous experience is required!
**Background checks will be required and arranged through the Lakewood office.
Volunteers may coach one or more events. Individuals can expect to commit to approximately 1 hour per week for practice, in addition to any preparation required.
Coaches may schedule weekly practices on the day that works best for them, with sessions beginning in early February.
Practices are typically held after school, and a
classroom can be reserved for each team. However, teams are welcome to meet at alternative times, locations or frequency if that better suits the coach and students participating in that event. For example, weekend practices can be held in library meeting rooms (bookable through the AADL website) or even in a private home.
Event coach training will be provided by WESO in the last two weeks of January. (approximately one hour via zoom)
Event materials will be provided by WESO and distributed to event coaches by the Head Coach.
This may all sound a bit daunting, if so, give us the opportunity to better explain the incredible aspects of participating in this event, the flexibility that can be offered and the many supports available to you throughout – OR just speak to a past coach. Email us at ptolakewoodweso@gmail.com and we’ll connect you.

Student Participation
- Students may participate in one or more events, depending on the availability of event coaches. Each student will first be placed in one event, and additional events will only be offered if openings remain. Each event typically requires a 1–1.5 hour practice session per week, and some academic events may involve extra independent study. Practice days will be determined by the event coaches.
- Each school may form only ONE team per event for each grade level. Unfortunately this means that students may not be able to compete in their first choice of event. We will do our best accommodate each student. This can be a “puzzle” so we appreciate your patience and flexibility!
- Parents will need to complete WESO medical emergency and code of conduct forms prior to start of practice, in January.
- If interested, please submit the form below by December 19th
