Lakewood’s New Building

Everything we’ve learned about Lakewood Elementary’s new building

Phase 1

Discovery Meetings

In March and April 2024, the builders, designers, and school administrators held multiple meetings to collect ideas and wish lists from school staff, parents and students.

These are the early days in the design process. Renderings have not yet been created. The designers will synthesize data from these meetings and use it to create a focused list of priorities that will drive the design.

This was one of many opportunities for input and feedback. Stay tuned for more opportunities to participate in the design process.

Here’s what we know:

  • Leading the conceptual design phase and initial engagement is Fielding International. Fielding International designs exclusively for schools
  • Leading the construction documentation and construction administration is is the project Architect, Stantec. Stantec is working toward carbon neutrality by 2025 and will be implementing many sustainable practices
  • The construction manager has yet to be assigned; this will happen in the fall
  • The school will be designed and built to CHPS building standards; this is similar to LEED standards, but specifically for school buildings
  • The current Lakewood will not shut down during construction
  • The new building will be located on the current field with all efforts made to distance it from houses as much as possible
  • The new building will most likely be a 2 story building
  • The new school will be designed for 345 students, but will be able to accommodate up to 420
  • It will have 2 more functional classrooms than the current building has
  • There will not be a pass-through for general traffic connecting the school to Liberty Rd.
  • The timeline set for this project includes 2 years of planning and 2 years of construction – the new building will be open September 2028

Phase 2

Next Feedback Meeting:

September 10th, 2024

AS OF MARCH 2026, the beginning of building will be delayed at least one year due to new constraints on the budget from tariffs. The team is reevaluationg all aspects of the plan and will update us when they have more answers.
